The Widely Integrated Distributed Environment project is a research consortium for Internet studies, with a goal to provide a wide area communication infrastructure with WIDE's telecom and operating system technology. WIDE works cooperatively with the
Internet Architecture Board, IETF, Internet Engineering Planning Group, Internet Numbers Authority, Asia Pacific Networking Group, APNIC, PACCOM, Internet Society, and the Japan Committee for Research Network, Network Information Center, Internet Engineering Group and JAIN consortium. Developed by 2 electrical engineering candidates at Stanford, Yahoo was started as a way to keep track of their personal interests on the Internet. In 1994 they converted Yahoo! into a customized database designed for the thousands of users that began to use Yahoo through the Internet. They developed customized software to help efficiently locate, identify and edit material. Yahoo is now hosted by the computers at Netscape. Yahoo provides targeted Internet resources and services for audiences, based on demographic, key-subject and geographic interests. Yahoo! Traffic increased to 115 million page views per day in June 1998.
