  • RFC 2705. This Internet Society document is being published for the information of the community. It describes a protocol that is currently being deployed in a number of products. Implementers should be aware of developments in the IETF Megaco Working Group and ITF-T SG16 who are currently working on a potential successor to this protocol. This document describes an application programming interface and a corresponding protocol (MGCP) for controlling Voice over IP (VoIP) Gateways from external call control elements. MGCP assumes a call control architecture where the call control "intelligence" is outside the gateways and handled by external call control elements.

  • The International Engineering Consortium developed a comprehensive informative tutorial on Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). To meet the service demands of network users through the next generation MPLS will most likely play an important role in routing, switching and forwarding packets. This tutorial is written at a fairly technical level even though terminology is thoroughly explained throughout the site. A glossary is included depicting the acronyms. The tutorial covers What MPLS are, a brief discussion on the introduction and development of MPLS is provided, the Various Components of MPLS are explained, and Protocol Stack Protocol and Traditional Routing and Packet Switching are explained. Diagrams are included where appropriate. A short multiple choice quiz is included at the end of the tutorial.

  • There is a clear need for relatively simple and coarse methods of providing differentiated classes of service for Internet traffic, to support various types of applications, and specific business requirements. The differentiated services approach to providing quality of service in networks employs a small, well-defined set of building blocks from which a variety of services may be built. A small bit-pattern in each packet, in the IPv4 TOS octet or the IPv6 Traffic Class octet, is used to mark a packet to receive a particular forwarding treatment, or per-hop behavior, at each network node. Links to relevant Internet drafts and Request for Comment are provided as well.
