The 6bone is an IPv6 testbed to assist in the evolution and deployment of IPv6, the next generation Internet network layer IP protocol often referred to as Ipng. 6Bone currently links close to 400 networks in more than 40 countries. These pages provide overview and operational information about the 6bone, and tell you how to join the 6bone. The 6bone operates under the IPv6 Testing Address Allocation of Experimental RFC 2471, allocated by the ngtrans effort of the IETF.

The 6ren is a voluntary coordination initiative of Research and Education Networks that provide production
IPv6 transit service to facilitate high quality, high performance, and operationally robust IPv6 networks. The 6ren initiative is being coordinated by the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the network for the Energy Research program of the US Dept. of Energy, located at the University of California's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Participation is free and open to all Research and Education Networks that provide IPv6 service. Other for-profit and not-for-profit IPv6 networks are also encouraged to participate. The 6ren was introduced to the IETF IPng and NGtrans working groups in Orlando, Fl at the December 1998 meeting. Initial participants were ESnet, Internet2/vBNS, Canarie, Cairn and WIDE.
